South Koreans, Still Working Too Hard
I am in South Korea this week. I really like this country. But as I noted before, the people here work too hard:
And someone said the real go-getters work 8-10. Now that’s the life!
Part of this, in the same post, I attributed to them playing a relentless game of economic catch-up:
The nation’s per capita gross national product has grown from only $100 in 1963 to $24,500 in 2007. This phenomenon has been referred to as the “Miracle on the Han River.”
At dinner last night two of the workers, at the Korean company that I am here to visit, said that they have been working 8-10 for a long time now on the program my company is working on with them. One of them has a wife and family. He is not home much, I guess.
The American I am traveling with asked about how things work out for two-income families. Someone responded that the women stay home with the kids. I guess if both parents worked 8-10, that would sort of create a problem for the children in the family.

BTW, I could live on Korean barbecue. I love that stuff.
