Dick Durbin Apologizes

Like others, I found the things that Senator Dick Durbin said as offensive. I heard excerpts from his apology this morning. It sounded sincere to me and it did not sound like he was trying to add a lot of qualifiers to what he said. You can read it here. The apology was given on the Senate floor. Here is the excerpt that I heard:

“Mr. President, it is very clear that even though I thought I had said something that clarified the situation, to many people it was still unclear. I’m sorry if anything that I said caused any offense or pain to those who have such bitter memories of the Holocaust, the greatest moral tragedy of our time. Nothing, nothing should ever be said to demean or diminish that moral tragedy.”

“I’m also sorry if anything I said in any way cast a negative light on our fine men and women in the military. I went to Iraq just a few months ago with Senator Harry Reid and a bipartisan Senate delegation. When you look in the eyes of the soldiers you see your son and daughter. They are the best. I never, ever intended any disrespect for them.”

So, the way I see it, you forgive the guy and move on. There will be plenty of other political fights without dragging this out. And, again, the guy apologized. The class thing to do is accept it and let it go. So it bothers me when conservative bloggers don’t get this. Here is Ann Althouse today:

Durbin apologizing. I saw this on TV and found it … icky. What are you really crying about, Dick? Your own miserable little career?

Or this from VodkaPundit:

I doubt Durbin is any more sincere today than he was thoughtful before. The political heat simply got too high, so he backed down.

Something I hate about left-wingers, like those at DailyKOS, is how they are always so certain of the darkness in the hearts of their political opponents (that’s us!). So I am bothered when I see conservatives do the same thing.

Update: Well, you can always count on the left to stoop lower. For apologizing, this blogger says “But Dick Durbin can go f**k himself.” KOS chimes in “I hate to say it, but I can’t help but agree.” Classy bunch, eh?

What bothers me about apologies is when they are plagued with “if’s”. I’m sorry IF my words offended anyone. He’s not apologizing for what he said, he’s apologizing that what he said offended you. But he isn’t taking it back. He accused our military of being Nazi’s using torture. That’s false. But he’s not sorry he said it, just sorry that it made you angry. To me that isn’t good enough.
