The Senate’s Newest Ugly Baby
WASHINGTON - Senate leaders reached a deal Thursday on reviving a broad immigration bill that could provide millions of illegal immigrants a chance to become American citizens and said they’ll try to pass it before Memorial Day.
What is the deal with the false urgency being created around the need to have steps to amnesty for illegal immigrants?
President Bush is onboard with this immigration pseudo-reform boondoggle:
“We congratulate the Senate on reaching agreement and we look forward to passage of a bill prior to Memorial Day,” said Dana Perino, deputy White House press secretary.
Why did the Senate cave?
They’ve also had to contend with fallout from opposition to the House bill that triggered nationwide protests that drew hundreds of thousands in Los Angeles, Chicago and Dallas and hundreds more in other cities and small communities.
That’s right. Contending with the fallout from illegal protestors who can’t vote is always hard in a democracy.
It would be the most comprehensive rewrite of immigration laws since the so-called Simpson-Mazzoli bill some 20 years ago.
Yes and we all know how successful that was. The failure of the Simpson-Mazzoli bill is why immigration reform is needed again.
Immigration reform without a clear plan for securing the border is toothless. With a million people a year continuing to flow over the southern border, it is just a matter of time before amnesty is needed again. Even if the flow is cut to one hundred thousand a year, it is still just a matter of time until amnesty is needed again.
There needs to be a clear plan to secure the border which is validated by independent experts. Is that asking so much? Without a good plan, there is little hope that the Senate bill is anything other than a steps to amnesty program.
Businesses that hire illegals will be happy because they get workers at bargain basement wages. Democrats are happy because they can retain their holy-than-thou politically correct posturing. Moderate Republicans are happy because they get extra points for acting like Democrats. But conservative and libertarian-conservative Republicans (like me), well all they can do is protest. But they will also remember, come next election time, which members of Congress failed the test on how to handle immigration reform.
Hot Air has a short video of the ugly baby created by the merger of pro-amnesty Republicans with Democrats.
Of course, passing the Senate bill does not create final law. A compromise must be worked out with the House. So there is still hope.
